Home at last!

Vince Hancock, August 4, 2012

Hi every one, I am writing this from beautiful Fogo Island, Newfoundland. Yes, I made it home. It was a great trip down, no delays etc. I flew out on the red eye from Toronto Thursday night, landing in St. Johns 3:30 in the morning NL time. Since the car rental place didn’t open until 7, I had bit a of a wait ahead of me so I lay on the floor of the airport and slept for a couple hours. However I use the term “sleep” very lightly. I picked up my car at 7 and was happy to be upgraded to a 2013 Ford Taurus. I have to say that this probably most beautiful car I have ever driven, I was very impressed…..and no, I am not being paid by Ford! ha.
I took my new toy and headed across town to pick up my cousin who had just arrived from Alberta the day before. We then hit the road. It wasn’t a great drive for the first couple hours, heavy rain and fog however that isn’t too big of a surprise for the Avalon peninsula. The sun finally made an appearance as we arrived in Clarenville where we stopped for lunch and met up with an old friend who I hadn’t seen in more than 15 years. Once we caught up on each others lives over lunch, we hit the road again. We arrived in the ferry line up and after a couple hour wait, enjoyed a great crossing. I could not have asked for a better evening. The sun beating down, the salty fresh air in my face and not a ripple on the water. It was those exact moment that make me so proud to be where im from.
Once I finally made it to my grandmothers, I was greeted with a great dinner waiting for me and of course, a cup of tea! Tea is always better at Grandma’s! My cousin next door was also home for the week end so I went and visited with her for a while. I then headed down across the island to my home town of Joe Batt’s Arm and met up with a bunch of my childhood friends who were all home visiting from Alberta. It was so great to see every one again and get caught up, not to mention that many laughs. It was just like old time’s. You know you have great friends when after years apart, you can just pick up where you left off as if you were never apart at all. It was one of the best nights i’ve had in a long long time!
Now, here I am, having a cup of tea, looking out at the ocean, and sharing my first moments home with you all. Today will be another great one as my brother and his family arrive later today as well as some more family members! I will end now and get started on my day as it will be a busy one. Have a great day my friends and talk to you soon!
