Currency Exchange

Vince Hancock, July 22, 2012

Lets talk money……Lets face it, travel is expensive, even for the most thriftiest of traveler. Under the category “Currency Exchange”, I will pass along some things i’ve learned on my own and from fellow travelers regarding money. I will start with the most obvious of tips, NEVER travel with excessive amounts of cash on you. No matter where you are, you are going to stand out as a tourist and that can some times make you a target for pick pockets and thieves. If you have a large amount of money on you, and then get robbed,  you run the risk of being left in a foreign country with no money. You can eliminate that risk with just a few easy steps.

Before you leave on your trip, exchange or buy some local currency of the country you are traveling in. I would recommend no more than $200. That is enough to for a taxi or transfer to your hotel, a meal or two (including tips) and any unexpected little expenses you may run in to. Once you have settled in to your new surroundings, you will have located an ATM or bank to retrieve money for your travels and remember, only carry small amounts. There are ATM’s every where and they accept most bank cards and credit cards, worldwide! They will always dispense in the local currency so know your exchanges and judge how much you need accordingly. Something this simple act can save a lot of headaches. If you are purchasing something in a crowded area and start flashing bundles of money, you have made yourself a target!  Not all currencies are available in  your area, you may have to order it through your bank or local currency exchange store. Do not wait until the last minute to do this because if they do need to order it, it could take a week or longer. If they can not get it for you, the airport of your destination will have ATM’s and currency exchange counters. If you can get it locally before you leave, I would advise to do so, just to save the worry if nothing else.

If you are making major purchases, I would recommend using your Visa as credit card companies offer protection plans and insurance.  Also once again, it  is easier than carrying large amounts of cash. Always notify your bank and/or credit card holder that you will be traveling and where. If you do not, you run the risk of the bank canceling your card due because they assume its stolen etc.

You don’t need to be wealthy to travel abroad but you do need to be smart with your money. Know your spending allowance, and plan accordingly. You most certainly do not need  to spend a lot to have a good experience. I have dined at the fanciest of restaurants and I have eaten at the cheapest of road side stands, everything teaches you something and makes memories that will last a life time.  More often than not, its the smallest, most insignificant details that make your trip memorable!  Save your money and spend wisely!
