On the move again….

Vince Hancock, March 13, 2012

Hey every one, just checking in to let you all know how my day went.
We left Phnom Penh this morning around 8:30 for the drive to Siem Reap. We all crowded in to a small bus and traveled along what the Cambodians call a highway. I would describe it more as the surface of the moon, maybe one day man will walk on the moon for real and let us know if that saying is correct however I will move on. It was an extremely hot day yet again so we were all very thankful for A/C. When we would stop for rest stops, the heat would hit you like a fist to the face once that bus door opened.
We made several stops but one stands out the most. We pulled in to one stop and as soon as the bus stopped, we were swarmed by children selling all kinds of things. They are very good at their craft, as soon as one of us stepped off the bus, there was a kid(s) attached to them trying to sell their particular item. We push past them and explore the area only to find a vast array of Cambodian confectionery. There was huge plates of dried tarantuala, beetles, crickets etc etc. I tried a garlic cricket and to my surprise, it wasn’t too bad…..a little crickety but tasty!
After this stop we pushed on. We arrived in Siem Reap around 3ish. Our hotel is quite nice here with all the Asian amenities you could want. We checked in and then most of is headed out for a boat cruise of Tonle lake. We boarded a small boat such as the one on the Mekong and headed off to visit a floating village. It was a beautiful day on the water. The village itself was worth the trip. Hundreds of floating house boats, stores and everything needed to sustain a community. We stopped at the floating market, pooled our money together and bought a case of food and then delivered said food to the floating school for orphans. We spent $25 in food and that will feed 65 children. It was a nice treat and was greatly appreciated! We then made a couple other stops and then headed back as the sun set beside us. The sun setting over a floating village was a spectacle in itself.
Once we got back to the hotel, we got cleaned up and headed out for dinner. We went to a local restaurant that had Aspara dancing. They put on a great show and made for a great night out. Once finished there, we retired to the hotel. It is going to be an early morning, we are heading out at 5 to see the sunrise over the Angkor Wat Temples! Saying I look forward to that is an under statement. It is the very reason I took this particular trip!
So that was my day today! Hope you enjoyed hearing about it and I will check in again soon. Good Night!
